Book Excerpt
The waters round Keel wore the same heady blue as the sky, and parted before the bow in eager haste. The wind, strong and steady, ever sweeping in from the south-west, drove the fleeing hull under bulging, bursting sails till the sheer rush of it stole away one’s breath, and touched one’s heart with exhilaration. The white of the sea leaped playfully over the sides to touch the bodies of the men struggling there with ropes and stays. And how they smiled, these men, how they laughed to harness such power, such joy… till darkness fled from them and every thought was light. They were one with the elements, exploring one avenue of tight speed till another opened itself to them. The taste of the ocean was on their lips, the brightness of the sun covered each body like a coat… the flying wind lashed back their hair and filled their lungs till they shouted with delight and sensed the soaring freedom of the birds.
