Book Excerpt
It was the queen’s garden. A sad place, most thought it to be, always deserted but for the solitary woman who spent hours here every day, and the gardeners who were not allowed in when she was there.
Birdsong sounded among the flowers and trees in the early morning and the late afternoon. Magical melodies from the tiniest song sparrow to the warbling, sable moonbirds, rarest of treasures only found in the deepest jungle. But as the sun rose higher the creatures of her place fell silent and the cries of street vendors, the noises of the crowds and the harsh calls of the dusty swamp crows invaded the peace. The garden lost its luster and pensive aspect. It became a sanctuary under siege, the birds cowering in their cages, seeking shade and shelter.
Yes, they could not roam about freely as she had intended. Marsh hawks and harriers would make prey of them all, while the crows would rob the nests of eggs and young. Things of beauty here existed only behind bars.
